Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Flue Liner Replacement: The Queens Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Famco flue liner that’s cracked, rusted through, or pulling apart at the seam, we stock Famco-spec replacement liners and install them throughout Queens, typically $1,900 – $4,300 depending on your flue height and liner diameter. We keep the common sizes on the truck, so most swaps happen same-day or next-day once we confirm your measurements. You’ll usually discover the problem one of three ways: rust flakes falling into the fireplace, a smell that drifts into the room instead of up the flue, or a sweep or inspection from another company flagging it. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes rigid stainless steel chimney liners in two main lines: the 300-series (304 stainless, rated for wood and pellet stoves) and the 400-series (316L stainless, the one rated for oil and gas appliances where condensation is a bigger issue). If your boiler or furnace vents through a Famco liner, it should be 400-series. If it’s a wood stove, 300-series is fine. The label on the liner itself usually states the grade, and if it doesn’t, the appliance it serves tells you what you need. The other key spec is diameter, and it’s not the same measurement as your flue opening. Famco liners install with a small annular gap between the liner and the original flue wall, so you need to measure the inside of your existing flue and drop down 2 – 3 inches for the liner’s outside diameter. Get that wrong and you’ll fight the thing all the way down. Queens homes split pretty evenly between oil boilers and gas furnaces, and the corrosion pattern tells us quickly which one you’ve got. We’re an independent service provider, not a Famco affiliate, but we install Famco-spec liners because they match what Queens chimney professionals are already specifying. And we’ll be straight with you: an aftermarket 316L liner from a reputable manufacturer performs the same as the Famco-branded part. What matters is the alloy grade, not the sticker.

Signs Your Famco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Rust flakes or metallic debris in the firebox or cleanout. The liner’s stainless has been attacked by condensation and acidic flue gas. Once pitting starts, holes aren’t far behind.
- Exhaust odor in the room with the appliance running. A breach in the liner lets flue gas escape into the surrounding masonry instead of out the top. This can happen even when the crown looks fine.
- Visible staining or moisture on the chimney interior. Condensation is wicking through the liner wall and into the brick. You’ll see dark patches, often at the smoke chamber level.
- Sudden difficulty with draft or a stove that burns lazy. A liner that has buckled or separated creates turbulence and reduces effective draft. The stove might work fine on cold days and struggle in mild weather.
- Any inspection report showing gaps, distortion, or scaling. Famco liners shouldn’t show scaling at year ten. If they do, the appliance’s exhaust temperature or moisture content is off, and the liner is wearing faster than it should.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Famco flue liner replacement in Queens runs $1,900 – $4,300 installed. The range breaks down cleanly: a straight 25-foot run in a 6-inch diameter costs less, while a 35-foot liner in 8-inch diameter with a chimney that needs a new crown or top plate costs more. Here’s how it splits:
- Famco-spec liner material: $700 – $1,800 depending on diameter, length, and 300- vs 400-series.
- Labor and removal of the old liner: $800 – $1,600. Demolition of a failing liner is the slow part, especially in older Queens chimneys where it’s wedged against decades of mortar.
- Top plate, rain cap, and sealing: $200 – $500. These get replaced with the liner; reusing old ones is a shortcut we won’t take.
- Camera inspection before and after: included, not an add-on. We show you the damage and then show you the finished install.
Every quote is written before any work begins, and the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the liner fails within a year, we come back and make it right for free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things before you call. Look for rust flakes in the cleanout, sniff for exhaust odor when the appliance kicks on, and inspect the visible liner at the top of the chimney if you can do so from the ground. What you shouldn’t do is try to pull or patch a liner yourself. A liner that’s mid-failure can tear and jam inside the flue, and you can’t see the condition of the 30 feet below the cap without a camera. The specific danger on a Famco liner that’s been failing for a while isn’t just that it’s sharp and unwieldy. It’s that the surrounding masonry may have absorbed enough moisture to be compromised, and the moment you yank the liner, you can dislodge loose brick and mortar into the flue. That’s a job for people who do it every week. Give us a call at (518) 719-4643 and we’ll get a camera up there before anyone touches a wrench.
FAQs
In Queens, a 316L Famco liner on an oil or gas appliance typically lasts 15 – 20 years, while a 304 liner on a wood stove often makes it 20 – 25 if the stove burns dry wood and gets swept annually.
Small pinholes in an otherwise sound liner can sometimes be patched with a stainless wrap, but by the time most Queens homeowners notice a problem, the corrosion is wider than the patch and replacement is the honest fix.
A straightforward liner swap takes one visit, usually 4 – 6 hours including removal, installation, and the before/after camera checks; taller chimneys or ones needing crown repair add a second visit.
We stock the common 6-inch and 8-inch Famco-spec liners in 300- and 400-series on the truck, so most Queens jobs are completed same-day without a second trip for parts.
If your Famco liner is showing signs of failure, call (518) 719-4643 for a free estimate. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts and show you the damage on camera before we quote a replacement.
