Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Queens Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex chimney cap systems throughout Queens, with most installations running $425 – $780 depending on cap style, flue size, and whether we’re also addressing the crown or chase cover while we’re up there. If your DuraFlex cap is rusted through, missing its screen, or letting rain pour down the flue, we can usually get it replaced within 48 hours of your call to (518) 719-4643. Most Queens homeowners discover the failure the same way: they hear dripping inside the fireplace after a heavy rain, or they spot rust streaks staining the chimney crown from the ground.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
The DuraFlex chimney cap line covers two main mounting styles: single-flue caps that slide over a round or square terra-cotta flue tile, and multi-flue caps that span two or more flues at the crown. Within those styles, DuraFlex makes standard stainless steel caps, deluxe models with larger mesh and hinged lids for easier sweeping, and stainless-steel top-mount caps designed to pair with DuraFlex liner systems. The compatibility gotcha we see in Queens: your cap’s inside dimension must clear the flue tile’s outside dimension by a quarter inch minimum, and if you have a DuraFlex liner, you may need a cap with a liner adapter collar rather than a generic base plate.
How to identify what you have: look for the small stamped tag on the cap’s underside or base skirt. If it’s gone, measure the flue tile’s outside width and length (not the inside opening) and match it to a DuraFlex size chart. We carry OEM DuraFlex caps plus quality equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that fit the same dimensions, and we’ll tell you plainly when the aftermarket part is just as good and when your liner setup means you should stick with the OEM piece. Alcott Chimney Queens is an independent service provider; we install and service these parts but aren’t affiliated with the DuraFlex brand itself.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks on the chimney crown or cap body. This means the cap’s metal is degrading, usually from years of exposure to Queens’ wet winters and salt-tinged coastal air. Once rust takes hold at the weld points, it’s only a matter of a season or two before you get gaps.
- Missing or torn screening. The mesh is what keeps squirrels, raccoons, and birds out. In neighborhoods like Forest Hills and Bayside, we pull more squirrel nests out of flues than anywhere else in Queens. Once the screen’s torn, a nest is the next call.
- Water pooling inside the firebox after rain. That’s the cap failing at its actual job. The rain path can be a cracked cap seam, a failed caulk line at the base, or a crown crack the cap can no longer shield.
- Draft problems that showed up suddenly. A tilted or partially collapsed cap can act like a baffle, disrupting the updraft and pushing smoke back into the room. If your carbon monoxide detector has also chirped near the fireplace, get it checked, not postponed.
- Visible cap wobble or movement in high wind. Queens gets real nor’easters, and a cap that shifts under wind load is one gust away from becoming a projectile on your roof or your neighbor’s car.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue DuraFlex-compatible cap in Queens, you’re looking at $425 – $580 installed. Multi-flue caps run $620 – $780, and top-mount caps paired with a DuraFlex liner system can push to $900 if we’re also cutting and fitting a custom collar. The installed price always includes the cap, stainless hardware, proper sealing at the base, cleanup of any debris around the crown, and a camera check of the top section of the flue so you’re not paying for a cap that just hides a problem below it.
Every cap installation gets a written price before we touch anything and a written guarantee on the work. If the cap fails or comes loose within the coverage period, the second visit is free. No fine print, no prorated nonsense. That’s what the 365-Day Done Right Promise exists for.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s my honest answer, because Ruben Castellano has never believed in upselling a ladder climb: if you can safely inspect from the ground with binoculars, do it. Check for visible rust, missing screen sections, or a cap that’s sitting crooked. Take photos. That’s useful information for any chimney professional, including us.
What you shouldn’t do is get on a roof in Queens without proper fall protection and roof experience. Steep pitches, old slate, wet leaves, and chimney access that’s never as easy as the YouTube video suggests. Plus, a cap that’s failing is usually sitting on a crown that’s also cracking, and an improper caulk job at the base just funnels the leak elsewhere. Call (518) 719-4643 and we’ll bring the right cap, the right sealant, and the harness.
FAQs
A quality stainless steel DuraFlex cap should last 12 – 18 years in the Queens climate, with galvanized versions trending toward the lower end because of winter road salt that migrates and settles on rooftops. If your cap’s older than 12 winters, schedule an inspection before it becomes a leak issue. Call (518) 719-4643 and we can give you an honest read.
In almost all cases, no. Once the stainless breaks down enough to rust through at weld points or around the screen frame, patching buys you one season at best. The metal’s compromised, and the labor cost of dismounting, patching, and remounting approaches two-thirds the cost of the new cap anyway.
A standard single-flue cap swap takes under an hour from setup to cleanup. If we’re also sealing the crown or fitting a custom base plate for a liner, you’re looking at two to two and a half hours. You’ll know your technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive, and they’ll show a photo ID badge at the door.
We run trucks through Queens stocked with the most common DuraFlex and Gelco sizes for both single and multi-flue applications, so most replacements happen in one visit. Oddball sizes, oversized flues, and custom liner caps we order and schedule within the week.
